How Does a Hydropower Plant Work?

A hydropower dam operates by restricting downstream water flow to create a reservoir. Water is released through a controlled opening in the dam, flowing downward to rotate the turbine. As the water passes through the turbine, its potential and kinetic energy are converted into mechanical energy, causing the turbine to spin.

Each generating unit in the hydropower plant consists of a turbine coupled directly to a generator. The mechanical rotational energy produced by the turbine is then converted by the generator into electrical energy, which is fed into the power grid.
